Caregiver
« Back to Glossary Index

A caregiver is a person who directly helps another person with daily activities, health care, and any other activities that a person may have trouble doing themselves. In the context of patient registries and clinical research studies, a caregiver is helping a person who needs assistance due to disabilities and medical problems associated with a disease and the caregiver knows the affected person’s health related needs.

A caregiver may be a family member or friend. Some caregivers are paid professionals (a person’s doctor, however, is not considered a caregiver). A caregiver may or may not have decision-making authority on behalf of the person for which they are caring.
